Heinkel He-70 Blitz was designed as a fast
passenger and mail plane. When it was first flown in late 1932 it was a
very advanced design, due to its streamlined fuselage, retractable
undercarriage and distinctive, gull-wing elliptical wings.
With its
maximum speed of 225 mph (360 km/h) it was fast and broke a number of
speed records. Lufthansa received
14 He-70's, with accommodations for 4-5
passengers, but operated them for only short time.
Military
version followed as a three-seat light bomber, serving with Luftwaffe,
Condor Legion and with Nationalist forces in Spain. Almost 300 planes
were built, eighteen for Hungary (as He-170) with radial engine.
By the start
of WWII He-70 was obsolete and served only as trainer aircraft. In Spain
it remained in service untill 1950.
