Almost immediately after Ki-27 Nate entered
production, Nakajima design team led by Hideo Itokawa started working on
its replacement. New aircraft had the same general configuration as
Ki-27 but differed from it by having fully enclosed cockpit and
retractable landing gear. The prototype flew for the first time in
January of 1939. Although airplane met all Army requirements,
pilots weren't exactly excited about it. Their main complain was
maneuverability inferior to Ki-27 and enclosed cockpit restricting view
to the rear.
Army decided to
order 10 additional service trial aircraft and they were completed with
some modifications. First of them was replacement of the canopy with
all-around vision one, and second, the most significant was installation
of the combat flaps that could be extended during flight to provide
greater lift and maintain much tighter turning radius and so the legend
was born....
